How to check your bag at home
Pack the bag as you will on the day, then measure it standing upright: the longest side, the width, and the depth at the fullest point. Include wheels, handles and anything in the outside pockets, because the gate sizer will. Compare the three numbers with your airline, largest to largest. If one side is over, a soft bag can often be pressed in; a hard case cannot.
If you fly more than one airline, buy for the strictest. A 40 x 30 x 20 cm bag fits Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, Vueling and Jet2, and the American, Frontier and JetBlue personal item limits. For British Airways or Air France keep it to 15 cm deep, and for United Basic Economy keep it to 25 cm wide. See every airline's rules.
Checked 4 Nov 2026. Airlines change their rules, so check your booking before you fly. Ryanair raised its free bag to 40 x 30 x 20 cm in September 2025.
