| Bag | Maximum size | Weight |

Ryanair raised the free bag from 40 x 20 x 25 cm to 40 x 30 x 20 cm in September 2025, and replaced the bag sizers at its airports to match. Older guides and many bags sold as "Ryanair size" still quote the old figure. A bag made for 40 x 20 x 25 cm still fits, but you now have 10 cm more width to use.
Every Ryanair fare includes the small bag. What changes between fares is the second, larger bag. With Priority & 2 Cabin Bags you can bring a 10 kg bag of up to 55 x 40 x 20 cm as well as the small one. Without it, a bag of that size has to be checked in, and if it reaches the gate staff can refuse it or put it in the hold for a fee.
The measurements include handles, wheels and anything strapped to the outside, and staff check with the metal sizer at the gate. Soft bags are easier here: a soft backpack that is slightly overpacked can usually be squeezed in, while a hard case that is 1 cm too deep cannot.
Tips for flying Ryanair
- Measure your bag packed, not empty: a full front pocket can add 3 to 4 cm.
- Wear your bulkiest layer and shoes on the plane to free up space.
- Compression packing cubes help a week of clothes fit in 40 x 30 x 20 cm.
- Liquids still go through security separately, so keep them at the top of the bag.
