On Frontier the free personal item is the bag most people try to make work, because carry-on and checked bags are paid extras on basic fares. At 18 x 14 x 8 inches it matches American's personal item limit, so one bag covers both airlines.
Frontier checks bag sizes at the gate, and a personal item that does not fit the sizer is charged as a carry-on at the higher gate price. A soft backpack that can be squeezed is the safest choice; avoid rigid cases that are close to the limit.
Packing for several days in 18 x 14 x 8 inches is possible with thin layers and compression packing cubes. Wear your heaviest shoes and jacket on board to keep the bag inside the limit.
Tips for flying Frontier
- Buy bags online before you fly: gate prices are the highest.
- Measure the personal item packed, including any bottle in a side pocket.
- Compression cubes turn a week of summer clothes into a bag that fits under the seat.
