Rain and wet weather: what to pack
Rain is the one forecast you can plan for. The aim is simple: keep yourself, your bag and your phone dry, and be seen when the light goes.
The kit list
A waterproof jacket does the first job. A rain cover over your backpack does the second, because most backpacks are water resistant at best and let rain in through the zips. A dry bag inside the pack protects anything that must stay dry, such as a phone, passport or spare layer.
Rain also brings dark afternoons, so a head torch or pocket torch and a rear light for bikes and bags make walking and cycling home safer.

Tips for the trip
- Pack a dry pair of socks in a sealed bag; it makes a wet day bearable.
- Put the rain cover on before the rain starts, not when the bag is already wet.
- Hang wet jackets to dry away from direct heat, which can damage coatings.
Questions
Is a water-resistant backpack enough in heavy rain?
Usually not for long. Water gets in through zips and seams, so use a rain cover outside and a dry bag inside for things that must stay dry.
