Day walks and hiking: what to pack
A good day walk needs less kit than people think, but the few things you carry matter. Plan for weather changing, daylight running out and feet getting tired.
The kit list
Carry a waterproof layer even on a sunny morning, a rain cover for your pack and a dry bag for your phone. Take water and a light; many walks take longer than planned, especially in winter.
Most hiking discomfort is in the feet and knees. Good socks, cushioned insoles and a supportive knee sleeve on long descents help many walkers finish the day in better shape.
