Cycling: what to pack
Whether it is a daily commute or a weekend ride, cycling kit has three jobs: be seen, carry the essentials and stay comfortable.
The kit list
Lights come first. A rechargeable front light and a rear light mean you are visible on dark mornings and evenings without buying batteries. A small waist bag or slim pouch keeps phone, keys and card close without a backpack on hot days.
For longer rides, a bottle you can drink from easily and a rain cover for your bag make a big difference. In winter, gloves that work with your phone save stopping to take them off.

Tips for the trip
- Charge lights the night before; most give a low-battery warning.
- Use a steady light at the front and a flashing light at the rear in traffic.
- Keep a spare dry layer in a dry bag on longer rides.
