Cycling: what to pack

Whether it is a daily commute or a weekend ride, cycling kit has three jobs: be seen, carry the essentials and stay comfortable.

The kit list

Lights come first. A rechargeable front light and a rear light mean you are visible on dark mornings and evenings without buying batteries. A small waist bag or slim pouch keeps phone, keys and card close without a backpack on hot days.

For longer rides, a bottle you can drink from easily and a rain cover for your bag make a big difference. In winter, gloves that work with your phone save stopping to take them off.

Be seen

Bike lights
Be seen on dark mornings and evenings; rechargeable by USB.
Head torch
Hands-free light for paths, tents, power cuts and finding things in the dark.

Carry

Backpack rain cover
Slips over your pack in a shower so what is inside stays dry.
Reusable water bottle
Refill it after security and on the go instead of buying bottled water.

Comfort

Warm gloves
Touchscreen fingertips mean you can use your phone without taking them off.
Sun cap
Keeps sun off your face and eyes; quick-dry fabric copes with sweat and rain.
Training shorts
Light shorts for runs, gym sessions and hot days.

Tips for the trip

  • Charge lights the night before; most give a low-battery warning.
  • Use a steady light at the front and a flashing light at the rear in traffic.
  • Keep a spare dry layer in a dry bag on longer rides.

Questions

Do I need lights to cycle at night in the UK?

Yes. UK law requires a white front light and a red rear light, plus a red rear reflector and pedal reflectors, between sunset and sunrise.
