Camping: what to pack
Camping is easy once the basics are sorted: light after dark, a way to make a hot drink, and somewhere to keep things dry.
The kit list
A head torch is the single most useful item in a tent. A pocket torch on a carabiner is a good backup. A compact cook set covers coffee in the morning and a simple hot meal at night.
Weather changes quickly in a field, so keep spare clothes and electronics in dry bags and bring a waterproof layer.
Light
Head torch
Hands-free light for paths, tents, power cuts and finding things in the dark.
Tent light or lantern
Lights the whole tent or table, not just where you look.
Pocket torch
A small torch on your keys or bag is always there when you need it.
Cooking and water
Reusable water bottle
Refill it after security and on the go instead of buying bottled water.
Dry and warm
Dry bag
Keeps phone, keys and a change of clothes dry on boats, beaches and in the rain.
Waterproof jacket
A shell you can wear over layers when the weather turns.
Beanie
A knitted hat traps the heat you lose through your head.
Thermal layers
A warm base layer under normal clothes makes cold days comfortable.
Good socks
Comfortable, breathable socks prevent most blisters on long days on your feet.
Mosquito net
A pop-up net you can sleep under where bites are a risk.
Tips for the trip
- Keep the head torch in the same tent pocket every night.
- Never cook inside a tent; use the cook set outside and away from the canvas.
- Pack a warm hat even in summer; nights in a field get cold.
