Compression socks

Compression socks squeeze the leg most at the ankle and less towards the knee. On long flights and car journeys, when you sit still for hours, many travellers find they reduce the heavy, swollen feeling in the legs and ankles.

About compression socks

We sell knee-high compression travel socks and shorter compression foot sleeves. Put them on before you set off and take them off when you arrive.

Compression socks are also popular with people who stand or sit for long shifts, such as nurses, drivers and shop staff. They feel firm when you first pull them on; that is normal. If your toes go cold, numb or change colour, take them off straight away.

How to choose

  • Pick the size from your shoe size or calf measurement on the product page; too tight is as bad as too loose.
  • Smooth them up the leg with no folds or rolled tops, which can dig in.
  • Move around on long flights too: walk the aisle and flex your ankles every hour.
  • If you have had a blood clot, are pregnant, or have a heart or circulation condition, ask a pharmacist or doctor before wearing compression socks.

Questions

Do I need compression socks for a flight?

Most people on short flights do not. They are popular for flights over four hours. The NHS advises anyone at higher risk of blood clots to get advice before flying.

When should I put flight socks on?

Before the journey starts, ideally at home or in the airport, and take them off when you arrive.

How should I wash them?

Hand wash or use a gentle cool cycle and air dry. Heat from a tumble dryer wears out the stretch.
