Backpacks
One good backpack does a lot: the commute, a weekend away, a flight with only hand luggage. Ours range from large travel backpacks with separate compartments to everyday canvas, corduroy and leather-look backpacks.
About backpacks
If you want a bag for a budget airline, start with our cabin bag checker: it shows which airlines' free bag sizes a given bag fits.
Pack heavy items close to your back and in the middle of the bag, with light, bulky things at the top. A balanced bag feels far lighter than one with everything at the bottom. On flights, keep your passport, phone and charger in an outer pocket so you are not unpacking at the gate.
For students and commuters, a separate front pocket for small items saves digging through the main compartment every time you need a pen or travel card.
How to choose
- For flying, check the airline's size first, including straps and pockets when packed.
- Padded shoulder straps and a chest strap matter more than extra pockets on a heavy day.
- A luggage strap on the back lets the backpack ride on top of a wheeled case.
- Canvas and corduroy look softer; nylon and polyester shrug off rain better.
